What is Digital X-Ray Imaging

An X-ray is one of the most commonly performed diagnostic imaging examinations. It uses a small amount of ionizing radiation to create images of bones, joints, and certain internal structures. X-rays help healthcare providers diagnose injuries, monitor medical conditions, and guide treatment decisions.

X-ray examinations are performed by a Medical Radiation Technologist (MRT) and interpreted by a radiologist. A report is sent to your referring healthcare provider, who will review the results with you.

What to Expect During the Examination

  • Check in at reception.

  • A technologist will explain the examination.

  • You may be asked to change into a gown.

  • The technologist will position you for the required images.

  • Multiple images may be taken from different angles.

  • Most examinations are completed within 10–20 minutes.

Preparation for Your X-Ray Examination

Most X-ray examinations require little or no preparation. Instructions may vary depending on the area being examined.

  • Bring your valid requisition form your referring doctor
  • Bring a valid Ontario Health Card or identification
  • Arrive a few minutes before your appointment
  • Inform staff if you are pregnant or may be pregnant
  • Inform staff of any relevant medical history or prior surgeries

  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows access to the area being examined
  • You may be asked to change into a gown
  • Remove all metal objects from the area being imaged, including:
    • Jewelry (necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings)
    • Watches
    • Belts and belt buckles
    • Hairpins or metal accessories
    • Glasses (for head/neck imaging when applicable)
  • Some piercings may need to be removed depending on the examination

  • No fasting required
  • Avoid clothing with metal buttons or zippers when possible
  • You may be asked to remove upper body clothing and wear a gown

  • Wear clothing without metal along the spine
  • You may be asked to change into a gown
  • Inform staff of any mobility limitations or pain before positioning

  • Follow any specific instructions provided on the requisition
  • Fasting may be required in some cases depending on clinical indication
  • Bowel preparation is uncommon but may be requested in selected cases
  • Remove belts, buttons, or metal objects around the abdomen

  • Remove jewelry from the affected limb
  • Wear loose clothing allowing access to the area
  • You may be asked to change clothing if it interferes with imaging

Additional Notes

  • Avoid applying lotions or creams on the area being examined when possible

  • Bring mobility aids (e.g., cane, walker) if required

  • Inform the technologist of pain or limited range of motion before positioning begins

X-ray examinations use ionizing radiation. The radiation dose is kept as low as reasonably achievable while maintaining diagnostic image quality.

The decision to perform an X-ray is based on clinical need and the expected diagnostic benefit compared with the minimal risk associated with radiation exposure.

Patients who are pregnant or may be pregnant must inform staff before the examination. Additional precautions or alternative imaging may be considered when appropriate.

In Ontario, X-ray examinations require a requisition from an authorized healthcare provider such as a physician or nurse practitioner.

The requisition provides clinical information necessary to determine the appropriate imaging protocol.
