What Is FibroScan (Elastography)?

FibroScan, also known as transient elastography, is an ultrasound-based examination that measures the stiffness of liver tissue. Increased liver stiffness may indicate fibrosis (scarring), while the Controlled Attenuation Parameter (CAP) measures fat accumulation within the liver.

Unlike a liver biopsy, FibroScan does not involve needles, incisions, or sedation. The procedure is painless, takes only a few minutes, and allows patients to return to their normal daily activities immediately after the examination.

Our healthcare provider may recommend a FibroScan examination to diagnose, monitor, or manage various liver conditions, including:

What to Expect During Your Appointment

During your FibroScan examination, you will lie comfortably on an examination table with your right arm positioned above your head. A small probe is placed against the skin over the liver, where gentle vibrations and ultrasound waves measure liver stiffness.

The procedure is painless and does not involve radiation. Most patients experience only a light tapping sensation during the examination.

Once completed, your examination is reviewed by qualified medical professionals, and the results are forwarded to your referring physician.
