What is Bone Mineral Density

A Bone Mineral Density (BMD) examination, also known as a DXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scan, is a specialized imaging test used to measure bone density. It helps healthcare providers assess bone strength, evaluate the risk of fractures, and diagnose or monitor conditions such as osteoporosis and osteopenia.

A BMD examination uses a very low dose of X-ray radiation and is most commonly performed on the lower spine and hips. Images are interpreted by a radiologist, and a report is provided to your referring healthcare provider.

What Areas Are Examined?

A Bone Mineral Density examination commonly measures bone density in the following areas. The areas examined are determined by the referring healthcare provider and established imaging protocols.

The lower spine is commonly evaluated because it is one of the first areas where bone loss may occur.

Bone density measurements of one or both hips help estimate fracture risk and monitor bone health over time.

In certain situations, such as when the hip or spine cannot be evaluated, the forearm may also be scanned.

What to Expect During Your Examination

A Bone Mineral Density examination is painless and non-invasive.

  • Your information and requisition will be reviewed.

  • You will be asked to lie comfortably on the examination table.

  • The technologist will position you for imaging of the hip and/or lower spine.

  • The scanning arm passes slowly over the body without touching you.

  • It is important to remain still while images are acquired.

  • The examination is usually completed within 15 to 30 minutes.

Most Bone Mineral Density examinations require minimal preparation.

Preparing for Your BMD Examination

  • Bring your valid requisition form your referring doctor
  • Bring your Ontario Health Card or other identification.
  • Arrive a few minutes before your scheduled appointment.
  • Inform staff if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.
  • Inform the technologist of any recent fractures, surgeries, or joint replacements.

Do not take calcium supplements for 24 hours before your examination, unless your healthcare provider instructs you otherwise.

  • Wear comfortable clothing.
  • Avoid clothing with metal zippers, buttons, underwire bras, or large metal decorations.
  • You may be asked to change into a gown if necessary.

Inform the clinic if you have recently undergone:

  • A CT scan using contrast material
  • A barium examination
  • A nuclear medicine examination

These tests may affect the timing of your BMD examination.

If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, please inform the technologist before your examination.
