A CT exam, short for Computed Tomography scan (also called a “CAT scan”), is a painless medical imaging test that uses multiple X-rays and a computer to create detailed, 3D cross-sectional pictures of the inside of your body.

What to Expect During Your CT Exam

  • Check in at the reception desk 15 minutes before your appointment time; the CT Technologist will call you when it is your turn
  • Our team will verify your information
  • The CT Technologist will confirm your exam instructions
  • You may be asked to wear a gown and remove metallic objects from your body

  • The CT machine is a large, ring- or doughnut-shaped scanner
  • You lie flat on a table that slides through the opening while the X-ray tube rotates around you
  • You will be asked to remain still
  • Simple instructions may be given, such as holding your breath for a few seconds
  • The scanner takes images in just a few minutes

  • In some cases, a special liquid dye called a contrast agent may be required
  • You may receive it by mouth or through an IV
  • The IV injection is generally quick, and a temporary warm sensation may be felt
  • Our team makes sure all conditions are met before contrast is given

  • You can go back to your regular activities as usual
  • A radiologist analyzes your images within 24–48 hours, much sooner if results are urgently required
  • The results are faxed to your referring physician immediately after

Preparation for Your CT Scan

Preparation depends on the area being examined and whether contrast is required. Always follow the instructions on your requisition or those provided by our staff.

  • Bring your valid requisition form from your referring doctor
  • Bring a valid Ontario Health Card or identification
  • Arrive 15 minutes before your appointment
  • Inform staff if you are pregnant or may be pregnant
  • Bring a list of current medications and any prior imaging reports

  • Wear comfortable clothing without metal zippers, buttons, or snaps
  • You may be asked to change into a gown
  • Remove all metal objects from the area being imaged, including:
    • Jewelry (necklaces, earrings, rings)
    • Watches
    • Belts and belt buckles
    • Hairpins and metal accessories
    • Glasses, hearing aids, and removable dental work (for head/neck scans)

  • Usually no fasting required
  • Continue taking regular medications unless instructed otherwise
  • Remove metal from the area being scanned

  • Contrast may be given by mouth or through an IV
  • You may be asked not to eat for a few hours before the exam
  • Drink water as instructed to stay hydrated
  • Tell staff about any previous reaction to contrast dye or iodine

  • A recent blood test (creatinine/eGFR) may be required before contrast CT
  • Tell staff if you have kidney disease, diabetes, or take metformin
  • Inform staff of asthma, severe allergies, or thyroid conditions

Additional Notes

  • Bring mobility aids (e.g., cane, walker) if required

  • Inform the technologist of pain or limited mobility before positioning

  • Tell staff if you are breastfeeding and are having a contrast exam
