If you live in Richmond Hill, Vaughan or Markham and your doctor has ordered a CT scan, the hospital on your requisition is not the only place you can book. King City Diagnostic Imaging is an outpatient clinic about 10 to 15 minutes from Richmond Hill, and we welcome CT patients from Vaughan and Markham with a requisition from a physician or nurse practitioner.

Quick Facts: CT Scans for Southern York Region Patients

CT requires a requisition from a physician or nurse practitioner and is booked by appointment. CT scans are OHIP-insured when medically necessary, and our staff confirm coverage for your exam when you book. Most exams are booked within one to two business days, depending on availability. A radiologist reviews your images within 24 to 48 hours, and the report is faxed to your referring physician.

Why compare facilities before you book a CT scan

More than one facility in York Region offers CT, and wait times differ from one to the next, even at the same priority level. Your requisition may name a hospital, but choosing where to be scanned is a reasonable conversation to have with your doctor. Our guide to CT scans in Ontario explains the four CT priority levels and how waits varied across York Region in 2026, and our article on imaging wait times and OHIP coverage explains what you are entitled to.

CT scan Richmond Hill patients: what to expect at your appointment

Once you are booked, the day itself is straightforward. Check in at reception 15 minutes before your appointment time, and the CT technologist will call you when it is your turn. From there:

  • Our team verifies your information, and the technologist confirms your exam instructions.
  • You may be asked to wear a gown and remove metal objects from the area being scanned.
  • You lie flat on a table that slides through a large, ring-shaped scanner while the X-ray tube rotates around you.
  • You are asked to stay still, and you may be given simple instructions such as holding your breath for a few seconds.
  • The scanner takes images in just a few minutes.

If your exam needs contrast, you may receive it by mouth or through an IV. The IV injection is generally quick, and a temporary warm sensation is common. Our team makes sure all conditions are met before contrast is given, and afterwards you can return to your regular activities.

What a CT scan can show

CT can examine the head, sinuses, chest, abdomen, pelvis, spine and joints, and it shows bones, organs, soft tissues and blood vessels in far more detail than a standard X-ray. That is why doctors use it to look for fractures, infections, inflammation, blood clots, aneurysms, organ abnormalities and tumors, and to check whether a treatment is working. Your requisition tells the imaging team which part of your body to scan and why, so they can choose the right protocol. Our guide to CT scans in Ontario compares CT with X-ray, ultrasound and MRI if you want to know why your doctor chose this test.

Who can order a CT scan

In Ontario, a CT scan requires a requisition from a physician or nurse practitioner, and a diagnostic CT cannot be booked by referring yourself. If you are not sure whether your doctor’s requisition can be used at King City, call 905-539-0555 and our staff will check it before you book. For a walkthrough of the whole process, read how to book a CT scan in Ontario.

Understanding CT priority levels in York Region

Ontario does not run one CT queue. It runs four, and a radiologist decides which one you are in based on your symptoms, your history and clinical guidelines, not on when you called.

  • Priority 1, emergent: target 24 hours
  • Priority 2, urgent: target 48 hours
  • Priority 3, semi-urgent: target 10 days
  • Priority 4, non-urgent: target 28 days

As of June 2026, urgent CT scans averaged one day across Ontario, while non-urgent scans averaged 79 days. Waits differ between facilities, which is why asking whether your requisition can go somewhere that can see you sooner is a reasonable question. Our guide to CT scans in Ontario breaks down how waits varied across York Region hospitals, and you can check current waits for any Ontario facility with Ontario Health’s public wait times tool.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to live in King City to book a CT scan there?

No. We see patients from Richmond Hill, Vaughan, Markham, Aurora, Toronto and across the GTA. You need a valid requisition from a physician or nurse practitioner.

Can I use a requisition that was sent to a hospital?

In many cases yes, but we recommend calling 905-539-0555 so our staff can check your requisition and book the right exam.

Is a CT scan covered by OHIP?

CT scans are OHIP-insured when they are medically necessary and ordered by a physician or nurse practitioner. Coverage depends on your eligibility and the exam requested, and we confirm whether your scan is covered before your exam.

Is parking free?

Yes. We offer free on-site parking and free accessible parking.

How long does a CT scan take?

The images themselves take just a few minutes to capture. Plan for a longer appointment overall: you check in at reception 15 minutes early, the technologist reviews your exam instructions with you, and some exams use contrast.

Do I need to prepare for my CT scan?

It depends on the area being scanned and whether contrast is needed. Many scans without contrast need no fasting, and you continue your regular medications unless told otherwise. Follow the instructions on your requisition and from our staff, and see our CT scan preparation checklist for the full list.

What if I am pregnant or may be pregnant?

Tell staff before the examination. Patients who are pregnant or may be pregnant must inform staff, and alternative imaging such as ultrasound may be considered when appropriate.
