If you live in Aurora or Newmarket and your doctor has ordered a CT scan, you have more choice than the name printed on your requisition suggests. King City Diagnostic Imaging has easy access from Aurora, Newmarket and Richmond Hill, and we book CT scans by appointment with a requisition from a physician or nurse practitioner.
Quick Facts: CT Scans for Aurora and Newmarket Patients
CT requires a requisition from a physician or nurse practitioner and is booked by appointment. CT scans are OHIP-insured when medically necessary, and our staff confirm coverage for your exam when you book. Saturday appointments are available. A radiologist reviews your images within 24 to 48 hours, and the report is faxed to your referring physician.
Where can I get a CT scan near Aurora and Newmarket?
Several hospitals and clinics in York Region offer CT, and wait times vary between them, even for patients in the same priority level. Your doctor’s requisition is usually written for a specific facility, but you can ask whether it can be sent somewhere else. Our guide to CT scans in Ontario explains how priority levels work and how to find a shorter queue.
How CT priority levels affect your wait
Ontario assigns every imaging requisition a priority level from 1 to 4, and a radiologist decides which one applies based on your symptoms, your history and clinical guidelines. The targets are 24 hours for emergent scans, 48 hours for urgent scans, 10 days for semi-urgent scans and 28 days for non-urgent scans. Ask your doctor’s office which priority your requisition carries.
If your scan is non-urgent and the appointment you were offered is far away, it is reasonable to ask whether the requisition can go to a facility that can see you sooner. Our article on imaging wait times and OHIP coverage in Ontario explains how the system works and what you are entitled to ask for.

What a CT scan can show
Doctors order CT exams to check for internal bleeding or injuries after an accident, to find the cause of sudden, unexplained pain, to guide a biopsy, surgery or radiation treatment, and to see whether a disease or cancer treatment is working. CT can examine the head, sinuses, chest, abdomen, pelvis, spine and joints, and it shows bones, organs, soft tissues and blood vessels in far more detail than a standard X-ray. Your doctor decides which exam answers your question, and sometimes an ultrasound is the better first test. Learn more on our CT scan page.

Questions to ask your doctor’s office
Before your doctor’s office sends the requisition, a few questions can prevent delays:
- Can this requisition be sent to King City Diagnostic Imaging?
- What priority level does it carry?
- Does the exam use contrast, and is recent bloodwork needed?
- Is the area to be scanned clearly stated, and is the referring provider’s fax number included, since that is where the report is sent?
- Should I keep my current appointment until the new one is confirmed?
Our step-by-step guide to booking a CT scan in Ontario walks through each of these in more detail.
If your exam uses contrast
Contrast is a special liquid that helps blood vessels, organs and other tissues stand out on the images. It may be given by mouth or through an IV. You may be asked not to eat for a few hours beforehand and to drink water as instructed, and a recent blood test may be required before a contrast CT. Tell staff about any previous reaction to contrast dye or iodine, kidney problems or diabetes medications. Our CT scan preparation checklist has the details.
Preparing for your appointment
Preparation depends on the area being scanned and whether contrast is needed. Bring your requisition, Ontario Health Card, a list of current medications and any prior imaging reports, and arrive 15 minutes early. Our CT scan preparation checklist covers clothing, fasting for contrast, and what to tell staff.
What to expect at your CT appointment
Check in at reception 15 minutes before your appointment time, and the CT technologist will call you when it is your turn. The technologist confirms your exam instructions, and you may be asked to change into a gown and remove metal from the area being scanned. During the scan you lie on a table that slides through the opening of a ring-shaped scanner, and you may be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds. If contrast is needed, you may receive it by mouth or through an IV, and a temporary warm sensation is common. Afterwards you can return to your regular activities.

King City is a ground-floor clinic with wheelchair-accessible entry and washrooms.
